In fact, as they begin to triumph over life’s shocks and losses, kids grow into more competent, resilient and vibrant beings.

Peter Levine and Maggie Kline

RESILIENCE it’s a fundamental aspect of children’s nature. Because children are both vulnerable and resilient, they are not only prone to be overwhelmed by common occurrences but also, and with the proper support, to rebound from them.

WHEN children experience shocking or traumatic events (such as falls, surgeries, accidents, witnessing violent events, bonding disruptions, bullying, loss, fevers, etc.), their nervous systems can be left altered. This means, that they get stuck in a survival response (fight or flight and freeze/dissociation), which doesn’t move towards resolution and relieve.

AS A RESULT of traumatic events, the nervous system becomes over-activated and can trigger the following:

  • anger
  • panic
  • irritability
  • passivity or whidhrawal
  • clinging
  • hyperactivity
  • dysfunctional behaviours
  • physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, abdominal pain, sleeplessness and dizziness

HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS EXTRA HELP? You can try mentioning the frightening episode and observe your child’s responses. A traumatised child may not want to be reminded of the predisposing event. And once reminded, she may become agitated or fearful. Some children avoid talking about it while others might be unable to stop talking about it.

THE CORE of Kid’s Resilience it’s the child’s natural ability to communicate and process her experiences through body language, play and energy.

Kids don’t live in their heads as much as adults. Therefore, the sessions
typically involves play, movement exploration, touch (if allowed), art making, images and symbols.

This approach addresses the child nervous system and the underlying causes of traumatic response, helping her alleviate the highly charged energetic state and return to healthy, flexible functioning. Moreover, when shock and trauma are released, also the reflexes, balance, grounding, coordination, assertiveness and sense of self are restored.

Toddlers, preschoolers and elementary school children easily express their worst fears and unconscious turmoil through their world of make-believe, play and art.

Peter Levine and Maggie Kline
